I Can Do It Myself

One of the things I got to do on the job that I was excited about was making cable. However, one step of the process I could not do on my own - the crimping tool to set the jack onto the cable. My hands were just too weak. Today, I was able to use the crimping tool! It was nice not to have to stop in the process and get a co-worker to help me out.

Have I mentioned I enjoy fashion? Maybe only once or twice. Anyway, I love to look at fashion magazines and get new ideas for my wardrobe. However, I often see something I like and then have a hard time finding it again. I have marked the pages with sticky notes but still find myself digging through a pile of magazines all marked with them. I tore out (yes, tore out) my favorite looks from the magazines and created a Look Book. This will be a never ending project as I add more ideas and fashion changes. But at least I will have what I need right at my fingertips in one source!

The weather forecast was nice and sunny for the weekend. I thought I'd take the opportunity to get outside and grill dinner. The grill needed cleaning before use, so with the help of my husband, I took apart the grill and cleaned it. This task ended up being a lot bigger than expected. The screws were in so tight they stripped when we tried to remove them. When all was said and done, this ended up being a two day project. Just as we got it back together, it started to rain! So much for a sunny weekend and grilled food.

Mostly Work, Some Play

I was moved into a different group at work last year in September. Been getting to know the new people a little, but there is not much interaction in this new place. We had a team building today and I went to lunch and a movie with my new work group. I had a good time and it was fun to get to know my team outside of the work environment.

I went to work without my watch on purpose. This is not something I do because I go crazy if I don't know what time it is. However, today I chose fashion over function and the watch just wasn't working with the silver bangles. It was tough, but I survived the day and looked cute doing it!

Our exchange student occasionally likes to try different combinations of food. One that she actually eats fairly often is ice cream and bugles. Sounds kinda weird to me. I ate ice cream with bugles on it. It wasn't too bad but I probably won't be doing it again.

My daughter and I cleaned out our closets recently. Usually I just drop it off at Goodwill, but today I dropped our used clothes off at a resale shop. Don't know if they'll buy any of it yet - it takes a couple of days for them to go through it. Whatever they don't buy, I will pick back up and put out on Freecycle.

I ventured once again into the kitchen arena. I had never used the blender before. Sharp blades moving at a fast speed do not appeal to me in any way. Today I did two new things, I used the blender and I made a smoothie. The blender is still scary and makes terrible noises, but the smoothie was delicious!

As I have mentioned before, I enjoy puzzles. I thought I'd try one I have been hearing a lot about. I attempted a Sudoku puzzle. I did a lot of erasing and I never actually finished. I got down to two squares in the same box that just were not going to work. The idea of starting over at that point was just too depressing.

I do not care for fancy expensive hamburgers. I am just never that impressed with them and would rather eat at McDonald's for half the price. My husband has been campaigning to eat at Scotty P's for some time now. I relented and ate at Scotty P's. I was pleasantly surprised and found it to be good and not as expensive as I had anticipated.

I have been noticing that all the stores have put their swimwear out. Seems kinda early to think about swim suits unless you are going on a cruise. However, from experience in years past if you wait too long to buy a swim suit all the cute ones are gone. This year, I bought a swim suit in February. The experience was a double whammy as the first swim suit I tried on was perfect! So I bought two in different colors.

I cannot wait for spring. I am so ready for longer days and sandal wearing weather. In anticipation, I painted my toenails different colors. We had a few warm days this week, hopefully they will be back now that I am ready for baring my toes!

A Grape

Johnny Depp is my all time favorite actor and has been since his 21 Jump Street days. Kinda dates me, huh? Anyway, I have seen almost all of his movies except maybe three or four. Today I finally watched What's Eating Gilbert Grape (about half, actually). I gave up on it because I found it some what boring and tedious. Regardless, Johnny was still as hot as ever!

After thought: After I posted this I got to wondering just how many movies Johnny Depp has made. I found a list of movies and realized that he has a lot more movies that I haven't seen than I realized. There are some I didn't realize he was in - like Platoon. Guess I have some movie watching to do!

Recycle with Freecycle

I like the idea of reusing things instead of sending them to some landfill. It is one of the draws of the thrift store for me besides the thrill of a good deal. I signed up for Freecycle earlier today. I responded to an offer and picked up free roof shingles! I also responded to a person who was looking for a used cell phone. I have had one sitting around for sometime and I am glad that someone will get some use out of it! Freecycle is an awesome way to reuse resources.

Just a Swingin'

Over the weekend my husband and I learned how to swing dance. It was great fun, but we sure won't be winning any dance contests! I taught my kids how to swing dance. My husband and I danced together to demonstrate, then he danced with our daughter and I danced with our son. It was really fun as a family affair too!

We are back home from our weekend get away. I was feeling hungry, but lazy so I had a pop-tart for dinner. It is good to be back home but I don't look forward to some of the everyday routines. It was great to have meals waiting for me all weekend at Pine Cove - no cooking and no clean up!

Zippity Do Da!

Pine Cove offers a few activities during free time. Included is what they call "online games". One is a zip line and the other they call the swing. Both require harnesses and heights - very scary for me. The swing is a cable run between two large wooden poles (like telephone poles) with a cable dangling in the middle. You climb up a ladder and someone clips your harness to that line. A rope is also clipped to your harness that is used to pull you up to the desired height. Once there, you pull a "rip cord" that is provided, it lets go of the rope and you swing out. I gathered my courage and a friend and I went on the swing. It was so much fun that I went on the zip line as well!

My husband and I went to a couples retreat at Pine Cove in Tyler, TX. I held hands with my husband for 20 minutes during one of the speaker sessions. Now, this might not seem like a big deal for most, but my husband and I are not the touchy feely type and usually only hold hands for a few short minutes.

I enjoy keeping up with the latest in fashion. I subscribe to a couple of fashion magazines, one of them called Lucky. The editor in chief of Lucky announced a caption-writing contest. I wrote captions for shoes. This was a lot harder than it would seem - I don't envy the editors quite as much as I used to.

My husband bought a Kitchen Aid mixer about a year ago. He uses it frequently, but I never have. I just looks huge and scary, so I have stuck to my hand mixer. I used the Kitchen Aid mixer. I made chocolate chip cookies and it was great - just toss the ingredients in and let it do its thing. I will use it all the time now - what a great tool!

The moon looked really cool tonight when my husband and I went walking. It was visible through bare branches and reflected in a small pond. I went back after our walk with the camera and I attempted to take a night scene photo. I was disappointed (but not surprised) that it did not turn out well. However, it made for an interesting picture when I played with it in Photoshop.

I researched the designer, Gayle Kirkpatrick, and found that the vest is probably from the 70's. The vest was union made by the The International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU).

Tattoos can be very fascinating. I don't really like a tattoo that covers a huge part of the body, I like something smaller and simple. I have never had a tattoo because it sounds painful and I don't like the idea of how permanent it is. A temporary tattoo can be fun though. I drew a temporary tattoo with a sharpie. Once I was done with it, it came right off with a facial wipe!

What's under your bed? I followed assignment #50 on Learning to Love You More and I took a flash picture of under my bed. The assignment calls for taking the picture without altering or cleaning under your bed first. The picture has to be in focus, which was difficult to do since all I could see was darkness. I finally got one that turned out good - and submitted it to the website.

My favorite ice cream flavor is Blue Bell's Tin Roof. It has also become the favorite of my exchange student, so as you can imagine, we eat a lot of it. Unfortunately, it is one of Blue Bell's "seasonal" flavors so you cannot always get it. While we were shopping for lunch stuff today, I found four cartons of Tin Roof and I bought all four of them! Hopefully, that will last us a little while before I have to go searching for it again.

Exchange Reunion

I mentioned previously that we have been hosting foreign exchange students this year (we actually only have one that is still with us - the other has already gone home). There are many of them being hosted in our area. We have had the privilege of meeting some of them through various events. Today my family and I attended a foreign exchange reunion where all the students in the area got together to talk about their experience so far this year. It was fun getting to see some of the students we met previously and to meet some new ones.

There have been times that I have seen things that I wish I could have photographed so I can share them with others. For some reason or another the opportunity passed me by. I found this blog, Unphotographable, that is all about describing the photos that were not taking. I wrote a couple of "unphotographables":

This is a picture I did not take of a huge tumble weed the size of a car as it blew across US 75 in Dallas, unscathed, in the middle of rush hour traffic.

Taxing Taxes part 2

The good news is, we got our tax returns already! Woo hoo - it came in quick! The bad news is, that a chunk of it has already disappeared to pay land taxes. However, this year, my husband and I paid our land taxes on time. We usually incur a penalty fee for having it in late. We try to save money to pay it when it is due, but you know how it goes. Some unexpected expense pops up just in time to wipe out the savings. At least the saga of taxes is complete for this year.

There is an Asian market that we go to from time to time. I love to walk up and down the aisles just looking at all the interesting stuff. One of the things I found very strange was vegetable popsicles. I was at the market today so I bought some to try for my new thing. I tried a red bean jelly ice milk bar. I picked red bean because I at least like red bean, but there was some unidentified green stuff in it. Ugh! Yuck! *Shudders in disgust*!!! There is a reason that vegetables should not be a part of dessert!

I've always been a little on the artsy side. I wanna be able to create pictures on the computer, but I just cannot control a mouse enough to make a decent picture. I gave it another try and drew a picture on sketchfu.com. I still have little control over the lines, I guess my hand is not steady enough. My son has been been participating in Boy Scouts for about 4 months now. Today he received Scout rank and Patrol Leader and I attended the Boyscout Court of Honor. The day slipped away so fast. We were sitting around watching movies and when I looked up it was 10:30pm! My husband and I have been trying to go walking at least 3-4 times a week. This past week, we had not gone at all - it was just too cold and wet. So my husband and I went walking at 10:30pm and took all three dogs with us. Usually only one dog goes with us - but they were well behaved so we may do that again.

The Sunday school class I attend organized a party at our local homeless shelter, The Samaritan Inn. The party was hosted by our youth group for the kids currently staying at the inn. I went with the youth to pass out bibles, toys, and snacks. The kids had a great time and really appreciated the gifts. I think it was a good experience for our youth to reach out to the needy and to see how blessed they are to have a home.

My family and I have been hosting a couple of foreign exchange students this year. It has been such a fun and rewarding experience - one that we plan to do again. Today, I discovered another form of hosting that I thought would be fun to try, so I registered to become a host for a toy on ToyVoyagers.com. So far I have a couple lined up to come visit here once they are back from their current vacations. Once they come to your home, you show them around town and take pictures of their various activities. You post the pics and an account of what they have been doing on their travel log. When they are done visiting, you send them on to the next requested host family. Sounds really cheesy and lots of fun!

So, today's new thing was completely out of the blue. I was sitting at work when my husband called to say his glasses were broken and could not be repaired. Because he could not see to work or drive, I took time off work to get my husband new glasses. We spent the afternoon at the mall getting his eye exam and waiting for the glasses. His selection was a pair of Dolce and Gabbana. My fashion loving daughter was quite jealous!

I have always found the Celtic knots intriguing - such beautiful complexity. I have always been amazed by the artistry. I found directions on how to draw a Celtic plait on wikihow.com. Carefully following the directions, I drew a Celtic knot. It is a very simple design - it would take some practice to draw something more complex.

There is an older shopping center near where I work. I am there often to shop at the Dollar Tree. I have noticed a little shoe store there called All $9.99 Shoes. Today I went into the obscure shop and actually bought shoes there! I picked the right day - they were all on sale for $4.99 - so I got two pair of shoes for $10.80! At those prices, who needs to wait for the tax return!

We actually have received all our tax paperwork! We have never had it all together before January was over - ever. My husband and I filed our tax returns before the end of January. It is great - I no longer have to worry about it. After sitting for an hour with our tax preparer (being lectured on how we can itemize every dollar), I think I deserve to go shopping with some of that return. It was way past time to color my roots. I had not done it because it takes so much time to mix the color, paint it on, and wait at least 30 minutes for results. While shopping today, I noticed that Revlon now has the Colorsilk in a 10 minute root touch-up. Perfect! Tonight, I colored my roots in 10 minutes! It worked great - I no longer have an excuse to let my unsightly roots get out of hand.

Paper Passion

I am a crafty sort of person generally, but have never tried the art of paper folding. I've just never taken the time to sit down and do it. Using just regular printer paper that I cut down to a square, I folded a bird and a frog. It was a little difficult to understand the instructions at first, but once I got it down it was fairly easy and the same folds are used over and over again for different designs.

I read a post on the Everyday Giving regarding bookcrossing. I had never heard of this before. I immediately checked it out and knew I was gonna have to do it. This is just the thing for people like me who don't often buy books because it seems like such a waste that I will be the only one reading it. What a fun way to share! On the way home from work today, I released a book at the Super Target in McKinney, TX. Since it is a women's book, I put it in the shoe department. I hope it finds a good home!

iPod Savvy

I have had a video iPod for almost a year now and have never put anything on it but music. I was disappointed to find that I can only sync the iPod on one computer. I do most of my computer stuff at work because it is faster and I find myself with a lot of down time. Today after a bit of research on the internet, I found that I can set my iTunes at work for manual sync and sync certain items without messing up what is already on there. I uploaded a video podcast and watched it at work today. The video podcast of choice? Who What Wear TV - today's episode: How to Wear Belts.

I enjoy all types of puzzles: word finds, crosswords, jigsaw, etc. I thought it might be interesting to make my own crossword puzzle. Instead of breaking out the graph paper and pencils, I created a crossword puzzle using software found on the internet. An ancient method of hair removal! Removal is achieved by creating a circle of thread, twisting it, and rolling it over the unwanted hair. Following the directions, I attempted threading. Pain! Lots of pain! This is way worse than waxing - I do not recommend it.

A friend of ours turns 50 this month and his wife hosted a birthday party today. While we were there, I played the bean game. For this game everyone starts off with a cup of 15 beans. The first person in the circle starts off by saying something that he/she has never done before. Everyone who has done that thing takes a bean from their cup and gives it to the "bean keeper". Then the next person in the circle does the same, and so on until there is only one person left with beans in the cup. I did not win the game, but had a lot of fun!

Tre Tre Chic

My daughter has always had her own sense of fashion. She can wear the oddest things and totally get away with it. There have been times that I have cringed when she walked out the door, like when she wore a tie dyed skirt over one shoulder. I have waited for peer pressure to work in my favor - but nooooo! Her peers always say things like "you look so European", "what a cute outfit", and "I wish I could pull that off". One day I told her that she could probably wear a trash bag to school and everyone would think she looked cute. I let my daughter wear a trash bag to school and yes she did look cute. I can't wait to hear what everyone had to say!

Peer reaction: Overall the trash bag was a huge success! Most of the girls loved the idea and some would try it themselves. The guys just couldn't get past that it was a trash bag and admitted that they would never have the guts to wear it. If wearing a trash bag as a fashion sweeps the nation, you'll know it started here.

What does Etsy mean?

I love scrapbooking. I love the stickers, tags, and other embellishments. I could fill an entire room with this wonderful stuff! Unfortunately, I do not have a big budget to spend on it. I gather interesting pieces bit by bit anywhere I can find them inexpensively. I ordered a set of 29 eclectic tags on Etsy.com from Lori at the craft boutique. I cannot wait to get these and sort through them - each design is different. Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy!

FYI...I did a little research on the meaning of Etsy. I found a video that explains it means "and if" in Latin. I put it in a Latin/English translator and here are the results: etsi - (acsi) even if, although, notwithstanding.

To celebrate the new year I had a New Year's Eve pajama party. We watched a movie, counted down to midnight, shouted out our "Happy New Year!", then everyone packed up and went home. We were in bed by 1 am - a very uneventful get together. Today, in honor of the new year and to fulfill my one new thing a day, I drank wine that was made by a co-worker. Now I am not a big alcohol drinker, but this was pretty good. Cheers!

I signed up for a stat counter at www.statcounter.com and it is awesome! I was looking at my stats today and saw a viewer from Manila - I was very excited. I also got my first comment today - thanks Texas Butterfly, you made my day! I feel positively giddy!

I have to say I'm a bit nervous. I have been creating a list and so far I only have 53 things - that isn't gonna get me very far. I am expecting that some new things will just happen, some things will come from the creativity of readers and others I will just have to steal from similar blogs.

I have been reading JenMac's blog In The New and it sounded like fun. I have decided to try it myself. I will attempt to do something new everyday for the year of 2008.

I am not looking to do something amazing everyday, just anything I have never done before no matter how small. I hope to have fun with this and hope you have fun following along with me - maybe even do your own new thing a day blog!
